A Close Call: Engine Failure on Australian Flight
In a heart-stopping incident, an Australian flight, QF781, experienced engine failure during its journey from Melbourne to Perth. The incident occurred around 8:30 PM on March 25th local time.
A Frightening Experience
After four hours in the air, as the plane prepared to land in Perth, passengers heard a loud bang followed by an announcement stating that the aircraft’s engine had exploded. One passenger compared the sound to a car tire bursting.
The pilots quickly shut down the engine manually and issued an emergency landing announcement. Finally, the Airbus A330-200 safely landed at Perth airport with firefighting crews on standby in case of an emergency.

A passenger’s photograph captured the plane parked on the runway, with a fire truck alongside it. “The pilots and crew on board did an excellent job; the plane landed safely, and everyone on board is safe,” reported a local Australian news outlet.
Despite losing an engine, the landing went smoothly. One passenger shared her experience on social media, saying, “It was a terrifying time. I cried the whole time.” Thankfully, all passengers and crew left the aircraft without any further incidents.
Investigating the Cause
Engineers from Qantas, the airline operating the flight, will inspect the engine to determine the cause of the explosion. “The pilots followed the procedure in such situations, manually shutting down the engine and requesting an emergency landing,” said a Qantas spokesperson. “This aircraft is designed to operate safely with one engine.”
The airline expressed appreciation for the cooperation and understanding of the passengers during this worrying incident. Former Qantas pilot Richard de Crespigny explained that engine failures can result from various factors. “It could be due to one of the 2,000 blades in the engine being faulty, causing damage,” he commented during an interview.
De Crespigny further noted the professionalism of the crew, stating, “The flight crew handled the situation, communicated with air traffic control, and executed a safe landing. For every eight pilots, there is one who has experienced an engine-related incident, and that’s why we have excellent pilots in Australia.”
This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of well-trained pilots and the need for regular engine maintenance and inspections. The thorough investigation conducted by Qantas will help prevent similar incidents in the future.
