A Detail that Gives a Sense of Affordability

Baojun Yep, a rumored upcoming car model in Vietnam, is set to be introduced and sold by TMT Motors in the first half of 2024. This electric car falls under the compact segment, similar to VinFast VF 3 and Wuling HongGuang MiniEV.

Recently, Ethan Robertson, a YouTuber known for reviewing Chinese cars on social media platforms under the name “Wheelsboy,” had the opportunity to experience the Baojun Yep. In his test drive video, he shared his straightforward opinions about this nearly 3.4-meter long car.

A Noteworthy Design

Ethan Robertson pointed out that the Baojun Yep has a square design reminiscent of the popular Suzuki Jimny, a small-sized SUV worldwide. The wide front bumper and extended wheel arches give it a sporty look. However, he also referred to the Baojun Yep as a “cuter version” of the Jimny due to its rounded edges on various details.

Affordable Feelings

With a 28.1 kWh battery pack, the Baojun Yep can travel about 300 kilometers according to the Chinese CLTC standard. It can be fast-charged from 30% to 80% in just 35 minutes using direct current (DC) power. Ethan Robertson immediately pointed out the flimsy charging port cover, which gave him a sense of affordability.

Not Suitable for Challenging Terrains

Ethan Robertson humorously demonstrated the Baojun Yep’s ground clearance by folding himself to the ground and peeking under the car. With a ground clearance of 15cm, the car is designed to easily overcome obstacles. However, it is not meant for rough terrains due to its rear-mounted motor and unsuitable suspensions for handling large speed bumps and potholes.

A Spacious Rear Seat

An interesting feature highlighted by Ethan Robertson is the option for customers to choose a front trunk that can be refrigerated or used as a warmer. Additionally, the Baojun Yep shares the same Global Small Electric Vehicle platform as the Wuling HongGuang MiniEV, but with an extended wheelbase of 10cm, providing more space in the rear seat area.

A Less Comfortable Ride

While driving the car, Ethan Robertson felt that the Baojun Yep did not handle well. Its short wheelbase and high ground clearance resulted in a stiff suspension and a bumpy ride. He also mentioned feeling less comfortable compared to the Wuling HongGuang MiniEV. However, he praised the car for its sharp handling, although he did have concerns about its stability during high-speed turns.

Safety and Impressive Features

The top-of-the-line version of the Baojun Yep comes equipped with DJI-developed Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), which include features such as lane-keeping assistance and automatic lane change. When activated, these features demonstrated quick and smooth performance.

The Affordability Factor

Despite having a higher price tag compared to the Wuling HongGuang MiniEV, the Baojun Yep (starting from 271 million VND) is still much cheaper than other cars in the compact segment. As a result, passengers may experience more motor noise and wind noise, which is not surprising given its affordability.

On the flip side, Ethan Robertson emphasized that the Baojun Yep is a well-equipped and impressive car. It comes with standard features such as electronic stability control (ESC) and front airbags. The higher-end versions offer various ADAS functions, including lane-keeping assistance and automatic lane change.

In conclusion, Ethan Robertson pointed out the Baojun Yep’s lack of comfort, practicality, and competitive pricing. However, he emphasized that the car brought him a lot of joy during his experience.
