Alabama Port Authority Announces New Intermodal Container Transfer Facility as Part of Inland Rail Expansion
The Alabama Port Authority is set to build a new intermodal container transfer facility (ICTF) in the northern part of the state as part of its ongoing inland rail expansion. This new facility, located in Decatur, AL, is a collaboration with CSX Transportation and will provide rail connectivity from the ICT at the Port of Mobile to customers in the central and northern regions of Alabama.
The decision to build the ICTF in Decatur is based on the redevelopment of an existing CSX facility, allowing for expedited access to customers in North Alabama. This expansion reflects the Port Authority’s commitment to advancing logistics infrastructure and meeting the evolving needs of its customers while contributing to the growth of the communities it serves.
“We are excited to announce the location of our second inland rail facility in Alabama, furthering our dedication to advancing logistics infrastructure in the region,” said John Driscoll, Director and CEO of the Alabama Port Authority. “This expansion not only signifies our confidence in the local economy but also reflects our ongoing efforts to meet the evolving needs of our customers while contributing to the growth of the communities we serve.”
The announcement of the North Alabama ICTF comes shortly after the Port Authority revealed its nearly $100 billion statewide economic impact in 2022. Additionally, the expansion partnership with CSX in Montgomery has resulted in $2.28 billion in private investments in the area since the initiation of the Montgomery ICTF project in 2022. Forbes has recognized the Alabama Port Authority as the second-fastest growing port of entry into the U.S.
Maryclare Kenney, CSX Vice President of Intermodal & Auto, expressed pride in the strategic collaboration with the Alabama Port Authority for establishing the North Alabama ICTF in Decatur. This project demonstrates CSX’s commitment to fostering growth, connecting markets, and driving economic progress for the region. The facility’s strategic location improves multi-modal flexibility throughout the state and delivers innovative, value-added rail-to-truck transportation solutions for customers.
The Alabama Port Authority’s expansion and partnership with CSX exemplify their dedication to enhancing logistics infrastructure and contributing to the economic development of the region. The new ICTF in Decatur will play a crucial role in connecting the Port of Mobile to customers in central and northern Alabama, further strengthening the state’s transportation network.
