Amkor Technology, one of the largest semiconductor testing and packaging service providers in the world, headquartered in the United States, recently released its 2023 financial report. Despite a 8% decline in revenue compared to the previous year, the company performed better than the overall global semiconductor market. But what makes their factory in Bắc Ninh, Vietnam, with a total investment of $1.6 billion last year so special?
Amkor Technology’s Financial Report
According to the financial report, Amkor Technology recorded $6.5 billion in revenue for 2023, an 8% decrease from the previous year. However, the company considers this decline to be better than the market average. Despite lower gross profit and operating revenue, Amkor earned a net revenue of $362.1 million, compared to $767 million in the previous year.
Strategic Investment in Vietnam
Amkor Technology invested $749 million in capital expenditure for 2023, including the synchronization of advanced system-in-package (SiP) testing standards and memory technologies in Vietnam. This investment is geared towards enhancing their testing capabilities and meeting the growing demand for semiconductor packaging solutions.

Expansion Plans and Advanced Technologies
In 2024, Amkor Technology plans to allocate $750 million towards capital expenditure, focusing on increasing investment in equipment while reducing construction costs. The company aims to heavily invest in advanced technologies such as SiP, 2.5D, semiconductor packaging, and microelectromechanical systems (MEMS). Additionally, Amkor plans to expand its operations in Vietnam, Taiwan (China), and Portugal this year.

Global Manufacturing Footprint
Amkor currently operates in 1.1 million square meters of manufacturing space globally, with a major presence in Asia and a factory in Portugal. Within Southeast Asia, the company has assembly and testing facilities in three countries. Philippines leads in terms of manufacturing area with 120,000 square meters, followed by Vietnam with 110,000 square meters, and Malaysia with 40,000 square meters.

Amkor’s Factory in Bắc Ninh, Vietnam
On October 11, 2023, Amkor inaugurated the Amkor Technology factory in Yên Phong II-C Industrial Park, Bắc Ninh province, with a total investment of $1.6 billion. This factory, covering an area of 23 hectares, is considered the largest semiconductor factory in the world for Amkor. In the first phase, with an investment of $520 million, it is expected to create job opportunities for approximately 10,000 workers by 2035. The initial focus of the factory will be on testing and providing assembly and SiP solutions for leading global electronics and semiconductor manufacturers.
