Bình Dương and Tiền Giang to have Additional Cities
In a recent announcement, it has been revealed that the provinces of Bình Dương and Tiền Giang in Vietnam will be adding new cities to their territories. This move is aimed at accommodating the rapid economic growth and urban development in these regions. Let’s take a closer look at the details.
Bình Dương Province’s Expansion
The government’s representative, Minister of Home Affairs Phạm Thị Thanh Trà, shared that Bình Dương Province has proposed the establishment of two wards named An Điền and An Tây within the Bến Cát town. These wards will be based on the existing natural area and population scale of An Điền and An Tây communes. Additionally, there is a proposal to create a new city, Bến Cát, based on the natural area and population scale of the existing Bến Cát town.
Once established, Bình Dương Province will maintain its current natural area, population scale, and administrative units at the district and commune levels. However, one town and two communes will be replaced by one city and two wards.
To explain the necessity of establishing the An Điền and An Tây wards, Minister Thanh Trà highlighted their impressive economic growth in recent years. These administrative units have experienced a rapid increase in per capita income, surpassing the national average. They have also met the required standards for urban infrastructure, making them eligible for ward status.

Meanwhile, the town of Bến Cát is one of the five key municipalities in Bình Dương Province and plays a vital role as a dynamic urban center in the north of Ho Chi Minh City. The development plan for Bến Cát aims to establish it as a hub for industrial, service, and transportation activities by 2040. In 2018, the Ministry of Construction recognized Bến Cát as a Type III urban area.
Expansion Plans in Tiền Giang Province
In Tiền Giang Province, Minister Thanh Trà disclosed that there is a proposal to establish four wards – Long Chánh, Long Hưng, Long Thuận, and Long Hòa – based on the natural area and population scale of these four communes. Furthermore, it has been suggested that these four wards be consolidated into two wards, with Phường 4 merging into Phường 1 and Phường 3 merging into Phường 2. Additionally, there is a plan to create a new city, Gò Công, based on the natural area and population scale of the existing Gò Công town.
After the establishment and consolidation, Tiền Giang Province will maintain its current natural area, population scale, and number of administrative units at the district level. However, there will be an increase of one city and a decrease of one town.

Thị xã Gò Công, situated in the southwestern economic corridor of Ho Chi Minh City, serves as a central urban area in the eastern region of Tiền Giang Province. It focuses on the development of coastal economy and industrial clusters. Considering these factors, the establishment of Gò Công as a city is deemed necessary.
Speaking on behalf of the reviewing agency, Chairman of the Legal Committee Hoàng Thanh Tùng stated that the committee supports the necessity of establishing these administrative units according to the government’s plan. The Legal Committee requested the concerned provinces to allocate sufficient resources for investment to ensure the quality of the urban areas, especially concerning the lower-than-required standards.
With unanimous approval from all delegates, the Standing Committee of the National Assembly has endorsed the establishment of the aforementioned administrative units in both provinces.
