The ongoing tensions between Russia and Ukraine have taken another twist as a top Ukrainian intelligence official finds himself in the crosshairs of the Russian authorities. This controversial move further accentuates the strained relations between the two countries. Russia remains committed to its stance against anyone who opposes its actions.

Accusations and Arrests

A Moscow court issued an arrest warrant for the Ukrainian intelligence chief, Mr. Budanov, in December 2023. He was charged with “terrorist activities” following allegations that he masterminded over 100 drone attacks targeting Russian civilian infrastructure. According to RT, the head of the Ukrainian military intelligence agency (GUR) openly endorsed these attacks on Russian soil. Initially labeling them as “ideological actions,” Mr. Budanov later assumed responsibility on behalf of Ukraine.

Justifiable Targets?

When asked about Mr. Budanov and other senior Ukrainian intelligence officials, Aleksandr Bortnikov, the head of the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB), emphasized that “those who oppose Russia and its citizens are legitimate targets.” The FSB initially identified Mr. Budanov as being behind the bombing of the Crimean Bridge in October 2022. This attack involved a powerful explosive device smuggled into Russia. The blast claimed the lives of the truck driver and four individuals in a nearby car.

The Arrest of Vasily Malyuk

On March 26, another high-ranking Ukrainian security official, Mr. Vasily Malyuk, the head of Ukraine’s Domestic Security Service (SBU), was also arrested by a Moscow court. He, too, stands accused of being the mastermind behind the Crimea Bridge attack. Last August, Mr. Malyuk admitted to planning the assault in an interview with the Unian news agency.
