BYD Announces Shockingly Affordable Electric Car, Aiming to “Annihilate” Gasoline Cars

BYD, one of the world’s leading electric vehicle (EV) manufacturers, has recently unveiled its latest model, the e2 Glory Edition, in the Chinese market. Priced at just $12,500 USD (or 89,800 Chinese yuan, equivalent to approximately 308 million Vietnamese dong), this upgraded version is a significant 12.65% cheaper than its predecessor. This move highlights BYD’s strategy to meet the growing demand for affordable electric vehicles in China. BYD claims that the e2 Glory Edition is the most cost-effective option among electric cars priced below 80,000 Chinese yuan, offering superior product experience at an affordable price.

The e2 Glory Edition is positioned as a pure electric car designed for families, with a range of 405 km. It measures 4,260 mm in length, 1,760 mm in width, and 1,530 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,610 mm. The car is equipped with BYD’s Blade battery technology and a single motor with a maximum power output of 70 kW.

This move aligns with BYD’s overall strategy to strengthen its dominant position in the electric vehicle market and accelerate the transition from traditional gasoline cars to electric alternatives. By offering competitive prices for models like the e2 Glory Edition, BYD aims to attract middle-income consumers who are increasingly concerned about affordability in the current economic climate.

BYD’s decision to reduce the price of the e2 Glory Edition reflects a broader trend in the Chinese electric vehicle market, with BYD leading the price war among industry competitors. Competitors such as Xpeng, Zeekr, and SAIC-GM-Wuling have also responded by reducing prices for their respective electric vehicle offerings, highlighting the fierce competition in this industry.

In addition to the e2 Glory Edition, BYD’s strategy includes plans to release new versions of other models like the Qin Plus and Chaser 05 at even lower prices. This move underscores BYD’s commitment to replacing traditional gasoline cars with electric vehicles on a larger scale, aiming to capture a larger share of the market and accelerate the “electrification” process in China.

On the other end of the spectrum, BYD is also venturing into the luxury segment with the recent debut of the Yangwang U9 electric supercar. With a starting price of $233,000 USD, the Yangwang U9 will compete with legendary car brands such as Ferrari and Lamborghini.

In Q4 2023, BYD surpassed Tesla to become the world’s largest electric vehicle manufacturer. The figures show that BYD sold 525,409 electric cars, while Tesla sold 484,507 cars.
