Califia Farms, the renowned plant-based beverage company, announced a significant sustainability milestone on Tuesday. The company has successfully converted all of its bottles in the United States and Canada to 100% recycled plastic (rPET). This transition marks an important step towards reducing the company’s environmental impact.

Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Energy Consumption

The switch to 100% rPET bottles will not only contribute to a healthier planet but also help Califia Farms achieve substantial environmental benefits. By making this change, the company expects to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by at least 19% and cut its energy consumption in half. The impact of this packaging update will be felt across Califia Farms’ diverse portfolio, which includes refrigerated plant milks, creamers, coffees, and teas.

Commitment to Sustainability

Dave Ritterbush, CEO of Califia Farms, emphasized the company’s commitment to softening its environmental footprint. He stated, “While Califia is an inherently sustainable business thanks to the plant-based products we produce, we recognize the importance of ongoing, forward progress in our sustainability journey. By moving to 100% rPET for our iconic curvy bottle, we’re taking a major step in reducing our reliance on virgin plastic and advancing the principles of a circular economy.”

Embracing Circularity

Califia Farms has long embraced the concept of circularity, actively striving to reduce the use of virgin materials and promote the use of recycled ones. The company’s sustainability programs have already implemented various lightweight initiatives, resulting in a significant decrease in the total amount of plastic used in caps, bottles, and labels. Between 2019 and 2023, Califia Farms’ circularity efforts prevented the production of four million pounds of plastic.

Ella Rosenbloom, Vice President of Sustainability at Califia Farms, highlighted the importance of replacing virgin plastic with recycled plastic to achieve a circular economy. She stated, “When it comes to circularity, we’re focused on accelerating change and thoughtfully considering how best to innovate, circulate, and eliminate the plastic that we use. This rPET project has been an enormously rewarding and complex one that has involved countless team members focused entirely on driving positive impact.”

Engaging Customers in the Journey

In addition to the bottle conversion, Califia Farms will proactively engage its customers by including information and QR codes on its packaging. These features will communicate the company’s commitment to sustainability and provide access to its sustainability reports. By actively involving consumers, Califia Farms aims to create awareness and promote further positive change.

Business Today applauds Califia Farms for its dedication to sustainability. This significant transition to 100% rPET bottles represents an important milestone in the ongoing effort to build a more environmentally friendly and circular economy.
