Can Gio Port in Ho Chi Minh City Could Commence Construction in 2025
Recently, in order to promote the construction of the Can Gio super port, the City’s Department of Transportation and Transport (GTVT) has sent a report to the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee regarding the plan to study and build the Can Gio international transshipment port. The GTVT had previously submitted the plan to relevant ministries and provinces to gather feedback and improve the project according to the Prime Minister’s directions. The project proposal has now been updated and refined after incorporating suggestions from experts, scientists, port managers, and related units.
The Vision for Can Gio Port
The objective of the project is to develop Can Gio Port into an international transshipment hub for Ho Chi Minh City and the surrounding region. This will attract shipping companies, transport companies, cargo owners, and international business entities to participate in the global transportation supply chain.
The GTVT recognizes that the Can Gio super port holds significant importance in the socio-economic development and national security of the Southeast region. Therefore, Ho Chi Minh City is expediting the implementation and construction of the port with the aim of commencing the project as early as 2025.
Project Details
The Can Gio international transshipment port project is planned to be located in Con Cho Island, Thanh An commune, Can Gio district. The estimated total investment for the port is around 129 trillion Vietnamese dong. The main port bridge is expected to have a total length of approximately 7 kilometers, while the wharf is projected to be around 2 kilometers.
The proposed Can Gio super port would cover an estimated area of about 571 hectares. It will include the port bridge, storage yards, internal transportation, office areas, staff housing, port operations, and technical infrastructure, spanning approximately 469.5 hectares. The water area for port activities is estimated to cover around 101.5 hectares.
By 2030, the projected capacity of the Can Gio super port is expected to reach 4.8 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units). By 2047, it could potentially reach 16.9 million TEUs (equivalent to half of Singapore’s current capacity). The port’s exploitation is estimated to contribute approximately 34,000 to 40,000 billion Vietnamese dong per year to the budget once it operates at full capacity.
To ensure the commencement of the project in 2025, investment preparations will be made from 2023 to 2024, followed by port construction from 2024 to 2026. The goal is to commence the project by 2025 and begin port operations by 2027.
