China’s Chip Manufacturing Capacity

Experts attribute China’s success to its substantial improvements in chip manufacturing capabilities. Ma Jihua, a seasoned telecommunications expert, stated that China’s chip production capacity has significantly improved, driven by the country’s high demand for chips in various internet-connected devices. As a result, China’s self-sufficiency in chip production is rapidly increasing.

Xiang Ligang, the CEO of the Beijing-based Information Consumption Alliance, stated that China’s self-supply capacity in chip production has increased from around 5% in 2018 to 17% in 2022, with projections to reach 30% by 2023.

Rapid Development of China’s Semiconductor Industry

China’s semiconductor industry is experiencing rapid growth. According to data from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the country’s total output of integrated circuits (ICs) reached 351.4 billion units in 2023, a 6.9% increase compared to the previous year.

Furthermore, the General Administration of Customs of China reported that the country imported 479.5 billion units of ICs in 2023, spending $349.4 billion. This reflects a decrease of 15.4% and 10.8%, respectively, compared to 2022.

Increasing Investment in Science and Technology

The Chinese Ministry of Finance estimates an annual 6.4% increase in financial expenditure for science and technology development over the past six years. From 2018 to 2023, spending on science and technology in China has risen from 832.7 billion Chinese yuan ($117.2 billion) to nearly 1.06 trillion Chinese yuan.

According to a government report submitted to the National People’s Congress on March 5th, China aims to enhance its self-sufficiency and strength in science and technology. The report outlines China’s plan to launch the AI Plus initiative and accelerate research in breakthrough and advanced technologies.
