Converting 9 billion VND, 18 times the value of the car causing the accident

Detik News, the leading news site in Indonesia, recently interviewed the investigative police about an incident. The damage caused by a Mitsubishi Xpander crashing into a Porsche 911 in a showroom was estimated to be around 5.7 billion IDR (9 billion VND). In contrast, the highest-priced Mitsubishi Xpander in Indonesia is only about 500 million VND. This significant difference has raised questions among netizens about whether the Xpander driver has the financial means to compensate for the damage.

The answer is possible. The police stated that the driver has taken responsibility and is willing to provide compensation.

According to the information from the police, the likely cause of the accident was the Mitsubishi Xpander driver consuming alcohol at home before driving to the showroom. The driver’s house is located near the showroom, so he may have thought that having a little drink and driving a short distance would not cause any serious issues. The driver claimed to have driven the Xpander to the showroom, but the police did not disclose whether he went there to buy a car or just to look around.

Ivan’s Motor, the luxury car showroom where the incident occurred, is located in an affluent area. The driver himself is a businessperson, although the exact industry is unknown. Therefore, it can be inferred that the Mitsubishi Xpander driver belongs to the upper-middle class.

One indication that the Xpander driver is not an ordinary person can be found in the license plate of the car. Despite being a regular car, the MPV model has a special license plate: B-8958.

In Indonesia, license plates are divided into four types: plates with one, two, three, and four digits. Each type can be further categorized into plates without letters at the end (more expensive) and plates with letters at the end. Among them, the most expensive type is a one-digit plate without letters, which costs about 31.5 million VND for a 5-year period. The cheapest type is a four-digit plate with letters, which costs about 8 million VND for a 5-year period.

In Indonesia, vehicle owners can purchase personalized license plates depending on the number of digits (the fewer digits, the higher the price) and whether there are letters at the end (plates without letters are more expensive).

The license plate of the Mitsubishi Xpander involved in this incident is a four-digit plate without letters at the end. This plate has a conversion value of 12 million VND and needs to be paid once every 5 years for maintenance.

However, the affected party, Ivan’s Motor showroom, still intends to take the case to court. The police stated that Ivan’s Motor does not trust the Mitsubishi Xpander driver and worries that he may prolong the compensation process due to various reasons. Therefore, they hope that the pressure from the court will ensure that the Mitsubishi Xpander driver fulfills his obligations.
