Donald Trump Declares a Major Victory

On March 4th, the Supreme Court of the United States unanimously overturned a previous ruling by the Colorado court that excluded Donald Trump’s name from the preliminary ballot of the Republican Party in the state. The Supreme Court’s decision deemed the Colorado court’s ruling ineffective.

In December 2023, the Colorado Supreme Court argued that Trump did not meet the standards to participate in the election under Section 3, 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, due to his involvement in the Capitol Hill riot. The Colorado court cited a provision that prohibits individuals who have participated in “rebellion or insurrection” from holding office after taking an oath to support and defend the U.S. Constitution. However, this provision has never been used to disqualify a presidential candidate.

With the Supreme Court’s ruling, Donald Trump will continue to appear on the ballots of various states across the country, as many other states are also considering removing his name from the preliminary ballots. The decision comes just a day before both parties enter Super Tuesday, the most critical day in the primary election campaign, when 15 states and territories will hold their primary elections.

Trump hailed the Supreme Court’s ruling as a “major victory for the United States.” It ensures that his name will remain on the ballots of the upcoming primary elections throughout the country, as several states had attempted to prevent him from participating in the presidential race. Illinois and Maine, in particular, had made efforts to exclude Trump, but they will now have to abandon their endeavors.

Previously, Trump had been disqualified from the primary elections of the Republican Party in Maine and Illinois for allegedly violating the provision against insurrection in Section 3, 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.

As the Republican Party’s formidable candidate, Trump is poised to challenge incumbent President Joe Biden in the general election on November 5th. His sole remaining competitor within the party is former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley.
