EPA Announces $3 Billion in Grants to Enhance Port Sustainability
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has revealed its plan to distribute $3 billion in grants through the Clean Ports Program. These funds aim to combat climate change and improve air quality at American ports.
Advancing Sustainable Infrastructure
EPA Administrator Michael Regan, alongside North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper, announced that the grants, which are part of the Inflation Reduction Act, will be used to invest in zero-emission port equipment and infrastructure.
The EPA’s initiative recognizes the significance of ports in driving economic growth and generating employment opportunities. Regan remarked, “Today’s historic funding announcement reflects President Biden’s vision of growing our economy while ensuring America leads in creating globally competitive solutions of the future.”
Funding Opportunities
The EPA plans to release two Notices of Funding Opportunities. The first opportunity, called the Zero-Emission Technology Deployment Competition, will allocate almost $2.8 billion to directly fund zero-emission port equipment and infrastructure. This includes human-operated zero-emission cargo handling equipment, harbor craft and vessels, electric charging infrastructure, hydrogen fueling infrastructure, and more.
The second funding opportunity, the Climate and Air Quality Planning Competition, will provide $150 million to support climate and air quality planning activities at U.S. ports.
Both funding opportunities aim to accelerate the adoption of next-generation clean technologies that promote efficient and sustainable goods and passenger movement while reducing pollution.
Promoting Economic Growth and Environmental Protection
Governor Cooper expressed gratitude to the Biden administration for their investments in fixing supply chains, developing infrastructure, and creating numerous clean energy jobs. Ports play a critical role in supporting supply chains, ensuring the accessibility of essential goods, and meeting everyday needs.
Companies and organizations interested in these funding opportunities can apply until May 28. Eligible applicants may apply for either or both funding options.
