FAA Awards Nearly $1 Billion in Airport Improvement Grants

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has recently announced the allocation of $970 million in airport improvement grants. These grants will be distributed to 114 airports across 44 states and three territories, supporting the increasing demand for air travel.

Enhancing the Travel Experience

In line with the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, the grants will fund various projects aimed at improving accessibility, sustainability, and the overall passenger experience. By investing in new baggage systems, expanding security checkpoints, and increasing gate capacity, airports will be able to modernize their infrastructure throughout terminals and ground transportation. Additionally, some of the grants will address the needs of air traffic control towers.

“These investments,” stated U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, “made possible by President Biden’s historic infrastructure package, will make it easier for passengers to get to and through airports, create jobs, and increase safety for all.”

Notable Grant Recipients

Among the airport improvement grants, several airports were awarded substantial amounts. Washington Dulles International Airport in Virginia received $35 million for the construction of a 14-gate, 400,000-square-foot terminal. The Denver International Airport in Colorado was granted $26.6 million to support the replacement project for a portion of its baggage handling system. Additionally, the Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport received $7 million for the construction of the foundation for the North/South Connector Road’s north phase.

Creating Job Opportunities

The impact of these grants extends beyond airport enhancements. By modernizing airports to meet current and future travelers’ needs, job opportunities will be created in both large and small communities. “Today’s funding,” said FAA Associate Administrator for Airports Shannetta R. Griffin, P.E., “not only helps modernize airports but also creates good-paying job opportunities.”
