Facebook Investigates Global Network Outage

Facebook’s parent company, Meta, recently announced that they are investigating the widespread outage that affected the Facebook, Instagram, and Threads platforms worldwide. Users globally found themselves unable to access their personal accounts, prompting Meta to address the issue. Andy Stone, spokesperson for Meta, acknowledged the difficulties users faced and assured them that they were working to resolve the problem.

CEO Mark Zuckerberg also acknowledged the situation, stating, “We are aware of the issue. Please give us some time to fix it.” The outage led to many users being locked out of their Facebook and Instagram accounts. While some were able to regain access by 23:20, others encountered issues such as forgotten passwords, missing authentication devices, or failure to receive verification codes.

During the outage, Instagram users on mobile devices noticed that their news feeds were not refreshing. Data from DownDetector revealed that Facebook experienced around 500,000 reports of outages at its peak, while Instagram received approximately 70,000 reports during the same time frame. Meta’s other platforms, Threads (a rival to Twitter) and the WhatsApp Business API, also experienced disruptions and interface issues.

Facebook’s advertiser status page acknowledged the “serious interruption” and stated that their technical teams were actively working to resolve the problem as quickly as possible. With 3 billion monthly active users, Facebook remains the largest social media platform in the world, while Instagram boasts an approximate 1.35 billion active users.

Following the news of the outage, Meta’s stock saw a 1.6% drop, falling below $500 after reaching a record high of $504 on March 4th, according to Forexlive.
