France Leading the Way in Supporting Ukraine

In an effort to assist Ukraine, France is working towards forming an alliance with countries willing to deploy military forces to Ukraine, according to reports from Politico and Baltic News Service. French Foreign Minister Stéphane Séjourné met with counterparts from the Baltic states and Ukraine to reinforce the idea that foreign military support is possible.

During the meeting, Séjourné emphasized the importance of determining how to assist Ukraine without allowing Russia to dictate actions or set boundaries. He stated, “It is not up to Russia to tell us how we should support Ukraine in the future. We make that decision ourselves.”

France believes that European countries’ military forces can aid Ukraine in clearing landmines without engaging in combat. Séjourné repeatedly mentioned this possibility during the meeting, clarifying that it would involve deploying troops but not for fighting purposes.

A Dire Situation for Ukraine

France has been praised for its vision and initiative in supporting Ukraine.

The meeting took place against the backdrop of Ukraine facing a severe shortage of ammunition, making it increasingly difficult to repel Russia’s intense attacks.

While Ukraine has not explicitly requested foreign troops, they have requested ammunition. Séjourné stated, “Ukraine is not asking us to send troops, but they are asking for ammunition. However, we do not exclude any possibilities in the coming months.”

In response to Séjourné’s proposal, Baltic ministers praised France for its vision. Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis reiterated the importance of defining red lines for Russia, rather than for themselves. He emphasized the need to support Ukraine wherever it is necessary.

Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna expressed the need for a different approach and a more robust initiative to move forward in supporting Ukraine. Latvian Foreign Minister Krišjanis Karinis stated that Ukraine needs practical support such as weapons, ammunition, and training for their soldiers.

Russia’s Warning to France: A Suicidal Decision

Russia warns France against a suicidal decision to support Ukraine.

Russian officials have responded to France’s alliance formation with caution and concern. Leonid Slutsky, Chairman of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs, warned that France is “playing with fire.”

According to Slutsky, French President Emmanuel Macron is pursuing direct confrontation between NATO and Russia, regardless of the position of most European capitals.

Slutsky questioned whether establishing a military alliance against Russia is plausible, suggesting that the Baltic countries are the only ones eager to maintain their leading positions vis-à-vis Russia.

In addition, Yury Hempel, a leader in the Crimea Foreign Affairs and Interethnic Relations Commission, referred to the new alliance between France and countries willing to deploy troops to Ukraine as “an act of aggression.”

Hempel called Macron’s initiative provocative and urged European politicians to maintain a rational perspective and not be drawn into Paris’s provocative actions.

Earlier, Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev warned that Russia no longer has any red lines with France following Macron’s statement of unlimited support for Ukraine.
