On Wednesday, the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Transit Administration (FTA) revealed that it had granted over $630 million in funds to assist transit agencies in replacing older rail cars.
Boosting Transportation Systems and Economic Competitiveness
The funds, allocated through the FTA’s Rail Vehicle Preplacement Program, will enable transit agencies in Chicago, Philadelphia, and Baltimore to acquire 300 new rail cars in order to replace their older counterparts. This investment will not only enhance transportation systems but will also create well-paying jobs and bolster economic competitiveness. Moreover, the introduction of new rail cars will contribute to safer and more modern public transit services, while also providing increased accessibility for individuals with disabilities.
Restoring Rail Systems in Major Cities
In Chicago, the Commuter Rail Division of the Regional Transportation Authority (METRA) will receive $100 million to purchase 50 new rail cars, replacing those that have been in service for over 40 years. The Maryland Department of Transportation Maryland Transit Administration (MDOT MTA) will receive an estimated $214 million for 52 new light rail vehicles, replacing the ones currently in use for more than 25 years in Baltimore. Additionally, the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) in Philadelphia will receive $317 million to acquire up to 200 new rail cars, replacing the existing ones along the Market Frankford Line, which is SEPTA’s busiest line and has been in service for nearly 25 years.
A Safer and More Reliable Transportation Future
U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg expressed his satisfaction with the investment, stating, “Millions of Americans use subways, commuter rail, and light rail every day, but many rail cars are decades old and in need of replacement.” He emphasized the importance of providing Americans with safer, more comfortable, and more reliable rail services through President Biden’s infrastructure law.
Building the Next Generation of American Transit
FTA Administrator Nuria Fernandez highlighted the significance of the new rail cars, stating, “Newer, better rail cars will mean a safer, more reliable, more accessible transportation future for the people of these communities.” She also emphasized that the procurement of these rail cars would support hundreds of jobs in American factories, contributing to the growth of the next generation of American transit. The FTA is proud to select these projects to improve passenger rail service nationwide.
Investing in Rail Vehicle Replacements
This funding is part of the second Rail Vehicle Replacement Program financed by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, which has dedicated nearly $1.3 billion to replacing rail vehicles throughout the United States.
