“Gazprom, the Gas Giant, Begins Connecting Vital Pipelines in Asia”

Gazprom, the Russian gas giant, has announced the start of a significant pipeline connection project in Asia on their official Telegram channel. This move reflects Gazprom’s commitment to expanding its gas infrastructure network in the Far East of Russia. The newly constructed Belogorsk-Khabarovsk pipeline, extending 800 km, will serve as the final link connecting the Power of Siberia with the Sakhalin-Khabarovsk-Vladivostok gas pipelines.

Integration into the Eastern Gas Supply System is planned for this pipeline, allowing Gazprom to link the existing gas infrastructure in western Russia with the eastern regions. By doing so, Gazprom aims to ensure greater reliability and flexibility in the supply of natural gas to domestic consumers and open up new opportunities for the gasification of Siberia and the Far East.

Apart from supplying domestic demand, the Power of Siberia pipeline also delivers Russian gas to China under a 30-year agreement. Connecting this pipeline with the Sakhalin Island, a major gas source, could further enhance gas exports to China. In November 2023, Xie Jun, Vice President of the China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC), revealed their collaboration with Gazprom in the Far East Pipeline project, which includes the construction of a cross-border section across the Ussuri River, linking the Sakhalin-Khabarovsk-Vladivostok pipeline with the city of Huma in China.

Gazprom has also planned to supply gas to China through the new Power of Siberia 2 pipeline, passing through Mongolia. This pipeline is expected to transport up to 50 billion cubic meters of gas per year, sourced from the Yamal Peninsula in Russia. Prior to the conflict with Ukraine and Western sanctions against Moscow, the Yamal Peninsula served the EU market.

Earlier reports suggested a delay in the construction of the proposed pipeline due to the need for Beijing and Moscow to conduct further economic studies on the project.
