The Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT) has recently announced the funding and agreements for the deployment of electric vehicle (EV) charging stations in the state. This initiative, known as the Georgia National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program, will bring five new charging locations to Georgia.

Public-Private Partnerships for EV Charging Stations

Under the Public-Private Partnership agreements, selected developers will be responsible for the design, installation, financing, operation, and maintenance of the EV charging stations. These stations will be equipped with Direct Current Fast Charging (DCFC) ports and are expected to be operational for a minimum of five years.

Andrew Heath, the Georgia DOT deputy chief engineer, expressed the significance of this program, stating, “The Georgia NEVI Deployment Program outlines the state’s approach to using our federal funding to address EV infrastructure gaps in our state’s Alternative Fuel Corridors.” He emphasized the importance of collaboration with the private sector to deliver innovative infrastructure solutions at strategic locations throughout Georgia.

Awardees and Locations

The five locations that have been awarded agreements are as follows:

  • Tifton: EnviroSpark Networks
  • Fort Valley: Francis Energy Charging
  • Dublin: Silver Comet Energy
  • Metter: EnviroSpark Networks
  • Brunswick: Love’s Travel Stops & Country Stores

Federal Approval and Funding

The Georgia NEVI Deployment Plan, which was developed in consultation and coordination with 57 stakeholders, received approval from the Federal Highway Administration last year. This program is set to receive approximately $135 million in federal funding through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law for the deployment of NEVI in Georgia.

Currently, Georgia only has 14 EV charging stations that meet federal requirements. Therefore, this new initiative is a significant step forward in expanding the state’s EV infrastructure and supporting the growing demand for electric vehicles.
