The global automotive design is undergoing significant changes as the transition from gasoline-powered to electric vehicles takes place. One noticeable shift is the increase in the vehicle’s wheelbase as the front area no longer needs to accommodate an engine. Additionally, the front-end design has become simpler without the need for a radiator, which previously served the primary purpose of cooling the engine.

Hyundai, however, has observed that this second change has inadvertently made electric car designs less exciting. Consequently, Hyundai is currently researching ways to reintroduce radiators into electric vehicles. However, their objective is not solely focused on aesthetic improvements.

Hyundai Mobis, a branch of the Hyundai Group, is developing an Integrated Front Face Module, a multifunctional interface for the front-end of electric cars. In addition to aesthetic considerations, this design also greatly enhances aerodynamics.

The Integrated Front Face Module utilizes active radiator shutters to minimize air resistance. The air vents, air scoops, and air ducts in the front-end of the vehicle also aid in heat exchange and battery cooling.

To demonstrate the effectiveness of this design, Hyundai claims that electric vehicles equipped with the Integrated Front Face Module have a 20 km increase in operating range compared to those without it. This feature is particularly advantageous for SUVs, as they typically lack optimal aerodynamic characteristics due to their unique design.

Hyundai Mobis affirms that they are currently perfecting the Integrated Front Face Module for use in Hyundai’s future electric vehicle models. They are also open to the possibility of licensing this technology to other electric vehicle manufacturers in need of such advancements.
