Indonesia Collaborates with China to Set Deep Sea Diving Record

A scientific exploration team consisting of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and the Indonesian National Research and Innovation Agency has successfully completed a month-long joint scientific expedition, diving to a depth of 7,178 meters in the Java Trench in the Indian Ocean. This achievement sets a new record for the deepest diving expedition in Indonesia.

The expedition took place from February 23 to March 23 and utilized the deep-sea manned submersible “Fendouzhe” (Striver) owned by the CAS Deep Sea Science and Engineering Institute. The “Fendouzhe” is the world’s deepest diving submersible and the first capable of reaching depths of 10,000 meters underwater.

During a welcoming ceremony for the joint expedition, Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, the Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment of Indonesia, emphasized that the collaboration has opened up new opportunities for enhancing maritime cooperation between the two countries. He expressed hopes of further deepening and expanding scientific cooperation and training more scientists and engineers for Indonesia.

Chinese Ambassador to Indonesia, Luo Kang, stated that China and Indonesia have been steadily deepening their scientific oceanic cooperation in recent years. He expressed his desire for scientists from both countries to achieve even more high-quality research results in the future, contributing to the development of a blue economy and sustainable growth.

This collaboration between Indonesia and China marks a significant milestone in deep-sea exploration and underscores the importance of international partnerships in advancing scientific knowledge and promoting marine conservation. As both countries continue to invest in research and technology, the possibilities for discovering new marine species, understanding oceanic ecosystems, and unlocking economic potential in the blue economy are boundless.
