Introducing the Maserati Grecale Folgore 2024 – The Future of Electric SUVs
Maserati is set to redefine the electric SUV market with its latest offering, the Grecale Folgore. Positioned as a direct competitor to the Porsche Macan, the Grecale Folgore is Maserati’s second electric vehicle (EV) following the GranTurismo Folgore. Unlike its internal combustion engine (ICE) counterparts such as the GT, Modena, and Trofeo, the Grecale Folgore only comes in one trim level.
While the Grecale Folgore may share a similar design to its ICE siblings, there are several distinctive features that set it apart. For instance, the front grille features slim oval-shaped cutouts instead of vertical bars, and the upper corner air intakes are color-matched to the body. The rear exhaust and diffuser have also been equipped with two additional speakers to emit sound to alert pedestrians.
To accommodate the battery pack, Maserati engineers have redesigned the floor, which now features 33 modules arranged in a rectangular shape. With a total energy capacity of 105 kWh (96.7 kWh usable), the battery pack consists of 29 modules positioned flat and four modules raised behind the rear seats. To maintain interior space while ensuring aerodynamic efficiency, the Folgore’s ground clearance has been reduced to 170 mm compared to the ICE model’s 211 mm.
The Grecale Folgore operates on a 400 V electrical system and is powered by two electric motors, delivering a total system output of 550 horsepower and 820 Nm of torque. With these figures, the Folgore can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.1 seconds and reach a top speed of 220 km/h, making it a performance powerhouse that sits between the ICE Grecale Modena and Trofeo models or the Macan 4 and Macan Turbo in terms of performance.
According to Maserati, the Grecale Folgore has a range of 501 km based on the WLTP standard and supports fast DC charging at a maximum power of 150 kW, allowing the battery to be charged from 20% to 80% in just 29 minutes. Slower AC charging is limited to 22 kW, which can provide a range of 100 km in one hour.
In terms of equipment, the Folgore comes with adaptive suspension and air springs, wheel sizes ranging from 19 to 21 inches (the smallest offering the maximum range), a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a 12.3-inch central touchscreen infotainment system, an 8.8-inch convenience display (for climate control), wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, intelligent assistant, and a 14 or 19-speaker sound system.
The Folgore also offers four different driving modes: Max Range, GT, Sport, and Offroad. In Sport mode, the driver has full access to the Folgore’s maximum power output, while GT mode limits everything to 80% and Max Range mode restricts it to 75% or 50% if the power limiters are activated.
The interior of the Folgore closely resembles its ICE counterpart, with the addition of specific features for an electric vehicle such as the infotainment system and paddle shifters on the steering wheel that control four-stage regeneration instead of gear shifting. Recycled and sustainable materials like Econyl and Feeltek are also used to trim various areas of the cabin.
