Iran Holds Funeral for Fallen Officers in Embassy Attack
Iran recently held a funeral procession to honor the officers who lost their lives in the embassy attack. This solemn event was marked by Iranians taking to the streets, carrying photos of the seven victims and raising banners demanding justice for the fallen. The funeral coincided with the annual Quds (Jerusalem) Day, where Iran organizes large-scale demonstrations nationwide to show support for the Palestinian state.
During the procession, it was reported that Ziad al-Nakhala, the leader of the Palestinian Jihad Islamic militant group, participated in the Tehran rally. This further highlights the significance of the event and the unity of the people in their struggle for justice.
One of the officers who tragically lost his life in the April 1st airstrike on the Iranian embassy in Syria was Major General Mohammed Reza Zahedi, a high-ranking commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ Quds Force. This attack is considered to be one of the most serious incidents since December last year.
In response to the attack, Iran has vowed to retaliate, causing concerns about the possibility of further escalating tensions in the Middle East. Nasser Kanaani, the spokesperson for the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stated that the country will decide on the form of response and punishment for the perpetrators.
Meanwhile, the Israeli military has ordered a temporary halt to furloughs for all combat units from April 4th onwards, in preparation for any potential worst-case scenarios. Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) released a statement saying, “Based on the assessment of the situation, we have decided to halt furloughs for all combat units of the IDF. The deployment of forces is being continuously evaluated as required.”
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also declared that Israel will respond to any attacks or intentions to attack. The tension between the two nations remains high, as both sides prepare for potential conflicts.
The funerals of two of the fallen officers were solemnly paraded through the streets of Tehran, accompanied by the cheers of the attendees. Some waved Palestinian flags in a show of solidarity. The officers are expected to be laid to rest on the same day.
These annual protests in Iran on Jerusalem Day, which take place on the last Friday of the fasting month of Ramadan, aim to support the Palestinians and their desire for East Jerusalem to become the capital of a future state on territories believed to be occupied by Israel since the 1967 war.
