New Federal Program to Receive $250 Million for Advancing Multimodal Solutions

The Federal Highway Administration has recently announced a groundbreaking initiative aimed at addressing congestion in metropolitan areas. Through the newly established Congestion Relief Program, a total of $250 million will be granted over the next five years to support the development and implementation of multimodal solutions that help alleviate traffic-related issues.

Enhancing Coordination and Optimizing Capacity

One of the primary goals of the program is to encourage collaboration between different transportation modes and improve coordination with transit systems. By optimizing existing highway capacity and transit infrastructure, the program aims to reduce congestion levels and minimize the associated economic and environmental costs.

Eligibility and Funding

During the initial phase, $150 million in grants will be allocated for fiscal years 2022, 2023, and 2024. Eligible applicants include cities, states, metropolitan planning organizations, and municipalities located in urban areas with a population of at least 1 million.

Encouraging Multimodal Travel

The program also seeks to promote alternative modes of travel. By funding projects that prioritize transit and mobility services, as well as integrated congestion management systems, the Congestion Relief Program aims to provide individuals with viable alternatives to vehicular transportation.

Addressing a Nationwide Issue

Federal Highway Administrator Shailen Bhatt highlighted the significance of addressing traffic congestion, particularly in densely populated areas. He emphasized the negative impacts of limited mobility, reduced air quality, and decreased productivity caused by traffic delays. Through this program, the aim is to tackle congestion and improve the overall standard of living while offering greater multimodal options for individuals residing in metropolitan areas.
