New Jersey, New York Airports Report Surge in Traffic
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has announced that the commercial airports in the region have experienced a significant increase in passenger traffic in January 2024, marking a strong start to the year.
Upward Momentum Continues
According to the Port Authority, the airports, along with other transportation sectors such as the seaport and the PATH commuter railroad, have maintained their positive momentum.
Airports Witness Growth
In January 2024, the commercial airports saw approximately 10.4 million passengers, an increase of nearly 90,000 compared to the same period in 2023. The only time this number was surpassed was in January 2020, when 10.5 million passengers were recorded. Despite an expected decline of 13 percent compared to December 2023, the growth can be attributed to an 11 percent increase in international travel.
Busy Port Activity
The Port of New York and New Jersey witnessed over 667,000 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) in January 2024. This surpassed pre-pandemic levels by 7.2 percent and exceeded the figures from January 2023 by 3.4 percent. Furthermore, that month’s volume also outpaced December’s by 5.3 percent. The port ranked as the second busiest in the country for loaded imports and exports, handling 447,514 TEUs, a 2.6 percent increase from January 2023.
Spike in Commuter Ridership
The agency’s PATH commuter railroad experienced a surge in ridership, serving approximately 4.1 million passengers in January 2024. This marks a nearly 10 percent increase compared to January 2023. Furthermore, the average weekday volume saw an 11 percent rise from the previous year.
Vehicular Crossings
The Port Authority reported that the six vehicular crossings served around 9.3 million eastbound vehicles in January. This number is lower than January 2023 and 10.4 percent below the busy holiday travel volume of December 2023.
With these positive figures, the airports in the New Jersey and New York region continue to grow and contribute to the overall economic development.
