In 2019, freight railroads carried an average of 3,667 tons of freight per train across two Class 1 railroads and 24 short line railroads. With a comprehensive rail corridor spanning 3,600 miles, NCDOT’s Rail Division oversees the North Carolina Railroad Company corridor, encompassing 317 miles of freight service and intercity passenger service. The extensive railroad network reaches 86 out of the state’s 100 counties, bridging the gap between rural and urban communities.
