Oji Holdings recently announced that it will cease the production of diapers for children starting from September, amidst a significant decrease in demand. The company has witnessed a decline in sales, dropping from a peak of around 700 million units in 2001 to 400 million units at present.

Notably, the sales of adult diapers have surpassed those of diapers for children in Japan over the past decade, and recent population statistics indicate that this trend will continue. According to preliminary data released by the Ministry of Health, Labour, and Welfare of Japan, the number of newborns in 2023 has decreased by 5.1%, reaching 758,631 infants, which is lower than the previous record of 800,000 in 2022.

The NHK (Japan Broadcasting Corporation) reported that children under the age of 15 accounted for less than 12% of the country’s population in 2022, while the group over 65 years old represented nearly 30% of the population.

As reported by The Guardian (UK), Japan’s population is projected to decline significantly from the current 125 million people to approximately 88 million by 2065, equivalent to a 30% decrease over 45 years.

Prime Minister Fumio Kishida described the prolonged low birth rate as an “existing crisis” and pledged financial support for households to facilitate easier access to childcare services and extend maternity leave for parents. However, aside from a few exceptions, government and local campaigns aimed at encouraging population growth have had modest effects.

A representative of Oji Holdings affirmed that the company will increase the production of hygiene products for the elderly. Oji Holdings also expects its products to be trusted and used in nursing homes.

The representative shared, “The demand for diapers for children has gradually decreased due to various factors, including the declining birth rate.” Oji Holdings has also decided to sell diapers in the domestic market until the stock is depleted, while planning to expand production in other countries such as Indonesia and Malaysia.
