Pennsylvania DOT Invests $23.3M in Philadelphia Safety Projects
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has recently announced a significant investment of $23.3 million towards citywide traffic safety improvements in Philadelphia. This substantial funding will support various essential projects aimed at enhancing safety for all modes of transportation.
Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) Program
Under the ASE program, $19.3 million has been allocated for multiple traffic safety initiatives. One of the key investments is $10 million for intersection modifications along the Roosevelt Boulevard route. This project aims to improve safety by implementing necessary changes to the intersections along this busy stretch of road.
Additionally, $3 million has been earmarked for the creation of neighborhood slow zones, which will help reduce speeding and enhance safety in residential areas. Another $2 million will go towards the Boulevard 2040 National Environmental Policy Act Process, focusing on long-term planning for the Boulevard’s development.
Moreover, $1.8 million will be dedicated to the redesign of Eakins Oval and Pennsylvania Avenue, aiming to enhance multimodal safety, accessibility, and mobility on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway. Another $1.5 million has been allocated to provide safe bus stops across the city. Lastly, $1 million has been set aside for the Citywide Intersection Modifications Program.
Automated Red Light Enforcement (ARLE) Program
The ARLE program will receive $4 million of this funding to support four traffic safety projects. Although specific details of these projects were not provided in the announcement, it is expected that they will contribute significantly to improving safety on Philadelphia’s roads.
Mike Carroll, Deputy Managing Director for the City’s Office of Transportation, Infrastructure, and Sustainability, expressed enthusiasm for these investments. He highlighted the success achieved through the implementation of automated speed cameras on Roosevelt Boulevard, which have effectively reduced speeding and saved lives. Carroll also emphasized the importance of expanding these programs to other areas of the city, particularly along the High Injury Network.
This substantial investment by PennDOT demonstrates a strong commitment to prioritizing the safety of Philadelphia residents and improving the overall transportation system. With these funds, the city will be able to implement vital traffic safety projects that address crucial needs and contribute to a safer environment for all.
