Porsche Taycan Turbo GT: The Electric Car That Outperforms Supercars
Porsche has recently announced that the Taycan Turbo GT has set new records at the Laguna Seca and Nurburgring racetracks. With a time of 1:27.87 at Laguna Seca and 7:07.55 at Nurburgring, the Taycan Turbo GT has become the fastest four-door electric car to conquer the ‘Green Hell’.
Although these figures may not place the German car in the top 10 fastest cars overall, it confidently surpasses some supercars and sports cars in the market.
McLaren 720S – 7:07.99
McLaren has not officially disclosed the lap time of the 720S at Nurburgring. However, renowned sources like Sport Auto and race driver Christian Gebhardt have independently tested the car and achieved a time of 7:07.99, which is 44 hundredths of a second slower than the Taycan Turbo GT.
Initially launched with a starting price of $305,000, the McLaren 720S is equipped with a 4.0L twin-turbocharged V8 engine, delivering an impressive 710 horsepower and 568 Nm of torque. Despite weighing only around 1,424kg, many expected that the lightweight 720S would outperform the approximately 2,268kg Taycan Turbo GT, but reality proved otherwise.
Lexus LFA Nurburgring Package – 7:14.64
Lexus produced only 500 units of the LFA, and out of those, only 64 were equipped with the Nurburgring Package – a special edition of an already extraordinary car.
As the name suggests, the Nurburgring Package enhances the LFA with several performance upgrades for tackling the famous racetrack. These include an additional 10 horsepower, improved gearbox for faster shifts, stiffer suspension for better cornering, and improved aerodynamics. While these features helped the LFA outperform the Lamborghini Aventador SuperVeloce LP750-4 by almost one second, they were not enough to surpass the electric car from Germany.
Ferrari 488 GTB – 7:21.63
The Taycan Turbo GT is faster than the standard 488 GTB, but it falls short of the Pista version. Specifically, the Ferrari 488 Pista completed a lap around the ‘Green Hell’ in under 7 minutes.
Today, a used Ferrari 488 can be purchased for as low as $200,000 to $270,000 in the United States.
Jaguar XE SV Project 8 – 7:23.164
To claim the title of the world’s fastest four-door car from Porsche, Jaguar utilized the XE model and equipped it with a V8 engine producing 592 horsepower and 516 Nm of torque, transforming it into the XE SV Project 8.
The British vehicle features an electronic rear differential with torque vectoring, adjustable coilover suspension, adjustable aerodynamics, and carbon ceramic brakes.
Only 300 units of the Project 8 were produced, with just 35 available in the American market. Estimated to have a value of around $200,000, the price of the Project 8 is trending upwards.
Rimac Nevera Time Attack – 7:05.298
The last car on the list, Rimac Nevera, is not slower but faster than the Porsche Taycan Turbo GT. However, despite the Nevera’s 900 horsepower advantage over the Taycan Turbo GT, it only holds a 2-second lead in lap time.
The base price of the Nevera is a whopping $2.4 million, significantly higher than the recently announced $230,000 starting price of the Taycan Turbo GT.
With its exceptional performance and record-breaking lap times, the Porsche Taycan Turbo GT proves that electric cars can outshine traditional supercars. As the automotive industry continues to push the boundaries of technology, the future of high-performance electric vehicles looks brighter than ever.
