Powerful High-Performance Engine
Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe has promised that the R2 will come in a top-of-the-line version with three high-performance engines capable of accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in less than 3 seconds. This acceleration surpasses that of the current Tesla Model Y Performance, which is reported to achieve the same feat in 3.5 seconds.
Furthermore, the Rivian R2 will be available in a two-motor all-wheel-drive version, as well as a rear-wheel-drive variant with a single motor. With a range of over 483 km per charge, the R2 outperforms the Model Y’s approximately 430 km range.
The R2’s innovative battery system consists of 4695 cylindrical cells integrated as a structural component, enhancing overall performance. It also features both Tesla-style NASC charging compatibility and CCS charging compatibility. In combination with a DC fast charging station, the R2 can achieve a 10% to 80% charge in less than 30 minutes.
The R2 is a significant leap forward in terms of tech advancements with its advanced driver assistance system. Equipped with 11 cameras and 5 radar sensors, this SUV allows drivers to take their hands off the steering wheel and eyes off the road, indicating a Level 3 autonomous driving capability similar to Mercedes’ DrivePilot.
Modern and Dynamic Design
The Rivian R2’s exterior design inherits characteristics from its predecessor, the R1S, but in a more compact form. Its distinctive headlights have been likened to pills by the media. The R2 measures 4,715 mm in length and 1,700 mm in height, making it 385 mm shorter and 137 mm lower than the R1S. The wheelbase is also 140 mm shorter at 2,935 mm.
With sleek LED headlights and muscular wheel arches, the R2’s exterior stands out. Inside, the vehicle offers luxurious amenities, including a 15.6-inch touchscreen, a 12-speaker sound system, premium leather seats, and a panoramic sunroof. The first and second-row seats can be folded flat, enabling camping experiences within the vehicle. These details were revealed by the company’s CEO.
A Formidable Competitor for VinFast VF 8
The Rivian R2 is a formidable rival for the VinFast VF 8. Both SUVs belong to the midsize electric SUV segment, offering modern and dynamic designs, premium amenities, and advanced safety features. Moreover, both models are competitively priced.
In the US market, VinFast officially distributes the VF 8 in two versions: the Eco City Edition and the Plus City Edition, priced at $49,000 and $56,000 respectively.
Meanwhile, the Rivian R2 is estimated to start at around $45,000. This new electric SUV delivers impressive power, challenging both the VinFast VF 8 and the Tesla Model Y.
With a length of 4,715 mm, the R2 is smaller than the Rivian R1S and VinFast VF 8 (4,750 mm), making it a reasonable choice for urban settings.
