Sapa tourism and impressive numbers in the first months of 2024

Sapa has continuously broken records, becoming the golden tourist destination of Lao Cai province. According to a report from the Lao Cai Department of Tourism, in just February 2024, Lao Cai welcomed 538,099 tourists, including 57,191 international visitors and 480,908 domestic tourists. Notably, Sapa continued to be the highlight on the tourism map of Lao Cai with around 181,500 tourists.

During the Lunar New Year holiday of 2024, the total number of tourists visiting Sapa reached an estimated 112,315, including 4,624 international visitors. The total revenue from tourism amounted to 387.7 billion VND ($16.6 million). These numbers shattered the unbelievable record of over 85,000 visitors during the New Year holiday in January.

To prepare for welcoming tourists during the Lunar New Year of the Snake 2024, localities and tourism businesses have actively prepared various new and unique activities, including a series of cultural and tourism festivals. Numerous cultural festivals of the local ethnic groups were organized throughout the traditional Tet holiday, such as the Xoe Festival of the Tay ethnic group, the Gau Tao Festival of the Mong ethnic group, and the Put Tong and Cap Sac Festivals of the Dao ethnic group.

One of the attractions for tourists during this Lunar New Year holiday was the “Sapa – Convergence of Cultural Space” festival, which was opened by the People’s Committee of Sapa town on February 7. The cultural space featured miniature landscapes of Sapa, including the terraced fields of Muong Hoa and the Fansipan peak, combined with traditional craft villages of the 5 ethnic groups: H’Mong, Dao, Tay, Giay, and Xa Pho. This cultural space has become a highlight, stimulating the curiosity of domestic and international tourists.

High demand, limited supply – Sapa hotels are fully booked during holidays

According to the Department of Culture and Information of Sapa town, Lao Cai province, during the Lunar New Year of the Snake 2024, hotels and accommodation facilities in Sapa were fully booked, with an occupancy rate of about 97% during peak days.

The hotel booking rate in Sapa on the second day of the Lunar New Year reached about 55%, while from the third to the fifth day it reached 97%, mainly concentrated in the mid-to-high-end segment in the central area. Regarding community tourism sites, the most crowded areas were Tả Van and Mường Hoa, with an average occupancy rate of 45%.

Currently, in Lao Cai province, there are 36 tourism areas and destinations, 1,554 lodging facilities with about 16,000 rooms, and 2,436 catering, shopping, and entertainment services. Sapa alone has about 842 lodging facilities, including 2 five-star hotels, 5 four-star hotels, 9 three-star hotels, 40 two-star hotels, 88 one-star hotels, 343 hotels and guesthouses, 355 homestays, and 508 other tourism services.

To solve the issue of insufficient accommodation facilities, in recent years, the government and local authorities have made efforts to develop infrastructure and transportation systems to keep up with the pace of local tourism development. The goal is to turn the central urban area of Sapa into a third-class urban city by 2030, becoming one of the most attractive tourist destinations globally.
