Severe Storm Hits Western India, Leaving over 300 Casualties

The western region of India has been hit by an unexpected and powerful storm, causing widespread destruction and claiming the lives of more than 300 people. The storm struck the Jalpaiguri district, wreaking havoc in just 10 minutes over a few square kilometers. Numerous homes have been damaged, trees uprooted, and both transportation and power supply disrupted. Several flights had to be canceled due to the storm’s impact. Many injured individuals have been rushed to hospitals for immediate treatment.

Indian Prime Minister Modi expressed his condolences to the families who lost loved ones and called on local authorities to provide assistance and compensation to the victims of this devastating storm. The Chief Minister of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee, canceled her schedule to visit Jalpaiguri and assess the situation firsthand. She personally visited those affected by the storm and assured them that the government would stand by their side, extending all necessary support.

Addressing the media, Mamata Banerjee reported that the storm had resulted in significant damage to houses and claimed the lives of five people, with two others in critical condition. She emphasized the government’s commitment to aid and help those in need. Around 170 injured individuals were admitted to the Jalpaiguri Medical College and Hospital and the Jalpaiguri State Medical College and Hospital. Additionally, approximately 200 people were taken to the Maynaguri hospital for treatment, while 100 others are currently receiving medical attention at the Barnesh Medical Center.

Similar storms also impacted some areas of neighboring districts such as Aliupurduar and Cooch Behar, but no casualties have been reported thus far.
