The Thai government is currently considering the legalization of casinos for economic purposes. According to the Prime Minister of Thailand, legalizing casinos will attract investment and tourism, create jobs, and generate revenue for the state. Additionally, legalizing casinos will provide a legal framework for more effective monitoring of gambling activities, thereby limiting illegal gambling hubs.

In Thailand, casinos are currently considered illegal, with only horse racing and state-controlled lotteries being allowed. However, illegal gambling, underground casinos, and sports betting continue to be prevalent issues in the country. Many Thai citizens often cross the border to neighboring countries to engage in gambling activities.

To address concerns about potential negative social impacts of legalizing casinos, the Prime Minister has stated that casino operations will only be permitted within designated entertainment complexes. These entertainment complexes will include concert halls, sports facilities, and more. The casinos will occupy only 3-10% of the total area and will be regulated by local authorities and governed by the law.

Julapun Amornvivat, the Deputy Minister of Finance of Thailand, further emphasized that online gambling will not be allowed due to the government’s inability to control it, especially in terms of preventing the participation of underage individuals.

Recently, the Thai House of Representatives approved a feasibility study report on the establishment of entertainment complexes with casino operations. The study revealed that the establishment of casinos within these entertainment complexes could potentially increase Thailand’s revenue by approximately $12 billion. The average spending of tourists visiting Thailand could also increase by 52%, reaching around $1,790 per trip.

Many believe that the legalization of casinos in Thailand would create strong competition with other casino hubs in the region and worldwide, especially in Singapore and Macau (China’s Special Administrative Region).
