Ukraine Attacks 2 Russian Amphibious Ships

Ukraine recently announced that they have successfully targeted two large Azov and Yamal amphibious ships, a communication center, and several infrastructure facilities belonging to the Russian Black Sea Fleet in Crimea^1^. This attack by Ukraine has been described as one of the largest airstrikes carried out recently. However, the Russian air defense system managed to shoot down over 10 missiles in the port of Sevastopol, Crimea^2^.

According to the Governor of Sevastopol, Mikhail Razvozhayev, the transportation infrastructure, including passenger ships, was partially damaged^3^. One of the houses was hit by shrapnel^4^. Razvozhayev mentioned that out of the six ships, five had broken windows, but they will be replaced and return to normal operations^5^. Furthermore, three buses, thirteen school buses, and an electric bus were among the vehicles damaged in Ukraine’s overnight attack^6^.

Earlier, Razvozhayev also reported that a missile hit an office building, while rocket debris fell onto a 5-story residential area. The authorities are still assessing the extent of the damage^7^. Sevastopol is home to a vital naval base and serves as the headquarters of the Russian Black Sea Fleet^8^.

This is not the first time Ukraine has targeted Crimea, as they have repeatedly attempted to attack Russian naval assets using missiles, drones, and unmanned underwater devices^9^. On the evening of March 23rd, the Russian Ministry of Defense (MOD) reported intercepting 19 missiles in the Belgorod region, along the eastern border of Ukraine. According to the MOD, the missiles were launched from the RM-70 Vampire system manufactured by the Czech Republic^10^.
