United Airlines Raises Checked Bag Fee by $5, Following American
United Airlines is joining the ranks of airlines raising their checked bag fees. This follows a trend that has generated over $5 billion in revenue for airlines in the first nine months of 2023 alone. Starting February 24, United economy passengers who book domestic tickets will pay $40 for a first checked bag, or $35 if they prepay online at least 24 hours before their flight. The cost for a second checked bag will be $50 at the airport or $45 in advance.
These changes apply to most flights throughout North America. In 2020, United increased the price to check a bag at the airport by $5 to $35, but kept it steady at $30 for those who paid in advance. However, certain credit card holders, frequent flyers with elite status, active military personnel, and travelers in top-tier classes will still be able to check a bag for free.
American Airlines also recently raised its checked bag fees, with the cost to check a first bag on domestic flights increasing from $30 to $35 if purchased in advance, and from $40 to $45 at the airport.
Increased bag fees are part of airlines’ efforts to boost profits while managing costs and navigating a challenging pricing landscape. JetBlue and Alaska Airlines have also raised their bag fees this year.
