VinFast Fadil Hybrid: A Worthy Successor!
VinFast, the leading Vietnamese automaker, is making waves once again with its latest innovation – the VinFast Fadil hybrid. In just 48 hours, the article titled “Why Not VinFast Fadil Hybrid?” has garnered the attention of tens of thousands of readers, sparking discussions about the possibility of a hybrid model “Made by Vietnam”. The author conducted a public survey, asking readers, “If VinFast Fadil hybrid were priced the same as the regular Fadil, what would you do?” The survey offered three options: Not interested, Interested in learning more, and Definitely buying.
According to the survey results, a staggering 61.3% of readers responded with “Definitely buying,” while 27.3% expressed interest in learning more, and 11.3% showed no interest. This survey reveals that a significant portion of consumers still trust the Fadil brand – a gasoline-powered model that has consistently topped the charts in terms of sales. Moreover, the survey indicates a definite interest among consumers in hybrid technology.
The Rise of SUVs and Crossovers
One noticeable trend in the automotive market, not only in Vietnam but also worldwide, is the growing popularity of SUVs and crossovers. In Vietnam specifically, 7 out of the top 10 best-selling models in 2023 were SUVs or crossovers, while only 3 were sedans. This trend can be attributed to the comfort and versatility offered by higher ground clearance vehicles. SUVs provide spacious and roomy cabins, allowing for a more comfortable driving experience compared to sedans or hatchbacks of the same class.
Additionally, the increased ground clearance of SUVs enables greater flexibility in various situations, such as camping or off-road adventures. VinFast has recognized this trend and designed all of its current and upcoming models as high ground clearance vehicles. Even the VinFast VF 3, a compact car, features a raised suspension to cater to this consumer preference.
Considering VinFast’s commitment to high ground clearance vehicles, it would be surprising if they were to reintroduce a low ground clearance model like the Fadil.
Exploring Hybrid Technology
When it comes to hybrids, electric motors are often the first thing that comes to mind. However, there are different types of hybrid vehicles based on the extent of their electric motor assistance. These can be categorized into three levels: Mild Hybrid, Hybrid, and Plug-in Hybrid.
In a Mild Hybrid, the electric motor only provides assistance during start-up and acceleration, similar to the Suzuki Ertiga hybrid available in Vietnam. On the other hand, Hybrid vehicles, as seen in many Toyota models, offer more electric motor assistance beyond just start-up and acceleration. Toyota’s system allows the electric motor to operate independently at low speeds or in parallel with the engine at higher speeds.
The Plug-in Hybrid, which is closer to a fully electric vehicle, can operate independently from the gasoline engine up to a certain extent, usually limited by the battery capacity. This type of hybrid system allows users to charge the vehicle, in addition to the internal combustion engine generating electricity. If VinFast were to choose an internal combustion engine for their hybrid model, the Plug-in Hybrid system seems the most feasible option, considering the expanding charging infrastructure supported by V-GREEN.
Partnering for Power
Developing a completely new internal combustion engine is a complex task, especially with increasingly stringent emission standards. Purchasing the rights to an established engine and producing it in-house could be a simpler and faster approach, similar to VinFast’s collaboration with BMW for the Lux models, featuring the renowned BMW N20 engine.
Toyota, being at the forefront of hybrid technology, would also be an ideal partner to consider for a comprehensive hybrid system. Utilizing an engine from a reputable supplier would not only streamline production but also enhance the marketability of the hybrid model. VinFast has already chosen to use the BMW N20 engine for the Lux models, which has been hailed as one of the best engines in the world.
The Fadil Cross: An Exciting Possibility
VinFast Fadil, originally a subcompact hatchback, could make a logical transition to a small crossover model. Comparable to the Toyota Raize or KIA Sonet, an A-segment vehicle optimized for urban environments would be a perfect fit for a hybrid powertrain. The start-stop nature of city traffic offers ample opportunities for the electric motor to generate power through regenerative braking, thus reducing fuel consumption.
However, it must be noted that this speculation may not materialize as VinFast already offers the VF 5, a compact crossover. To some extent, the VF 5 could be considered the “successor” to the Fadil, both belonging to the entry-level segment. Therefore, the chances of the Fadil name making a comeback seem unlikely.
In conclusion, the VinFast Fadil hybrid holds great potential as a worthy successor that combines the popularity of SUVs and crossovers with the efficiency of hybrid technology. VinFast’s commitment to high ground clearance vehicles and their knack for collaborating with reputable partners make the Fadil hybrid an exciting prospect. Although some questions remain, including the choice of hybrid system and whether the Fadil name will be retained, one thing is certain – VinFast continues to make waves in the automotive industry.
