The Central Election Commission of Russia (CEC) has officially announced that Vladimir Putin has secured a resounding victory in the 2024 Russian Presidential election. The inauguration of the President-elect is scheduled to take place on May 7th.

According to Ella Pamfilova, the head of the CEC, more than 76.2 million Russian voters cast their ballots in favor of Putin, giving him an overwhelming 87.28% of the vote. In contrast, his opponents in the race, Nikolay Kharitonov from the Communist Party, Vladislav Davankov representing the New People’s Party, and Leonid Slutsky, the leader of the Liberal Democratic Party of Russia (LDPR), received 4.31%, 3.85%, and 3.2% of the votes, respectively.

The official data reveals that Russia has a total of 112 million eligible voters out of a population of 146.2 million. However, this figure does not include the four Ukrainian territories that were annexed by Russia in the autumn of 2022. The 2024 Russian Presidential election, held from March 15th to March 17th, witnessed a record-high voter turnout of over 77%.

As a former KGB officer during the Soviet era, Putin was first elected as the President of Russia in 2000, serving two consecutive four-year terms until 2008. From 2008 to 2012, he held the position of Prime Minister under President Dmitry Medvedev.

During President Medvedev’s tenure, the Russian Constitution was amended to extend the presidential term from four to six years. Putin returned to the position of President in 2012 and was re-elected in 2018. A constitutional reform in 2020 established a limit of two consecutive presidential terms but “nullified” Putin’s previous terms, allowing him to run for the country’s highest office once again.

The inauguration of the President-elect is set to coincide with the resignation of the Russian government in early May. According to the constitution, a new government must be formed within one month.

In response to his victory, President-elect Putin expressed his gratitude to all those who participated in the voting, regardless of their choice of candidate. He also emphasized that the election results demonstrate Russia’s strength as “a large and tightly-knit family.”

President Putin acknowledged that this outcome “demands even greater commitment and effectiveness” from him and his associates, promising to make every effort to meet the expectations of the Russian people.
