Steve Nevey, a seasoned mariner, has been chosen as the new assistant secretary for the Washington State Ferries Division, beginning on March 16. Nevey’s appointment comes after Patty Rubstello’s resignation. Secretary of Transportation Roger Millar commended Nevey’s extensive maritime background, spanning over two decades, including experience on large tankers, ferries, and private craft, as well as shoreside operations for Holland America.

Since joining Washington State Ferries in 2021, Nevey has been devoted to addressing staffing shortages and vessel-related maintenance and preservation challenges alongside his team and WSF leadership. Their goal is to improve long-term service and reliability for WSF system users. Millar expressed his gratitude to Patty Rubstello, who served Washingtonians throughout her 30-year public service career with the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT).

Nevey’s maritime journey began after completing high school when he attended a prestigious maritime academy in the UK. He subsequently worked for a ferry system in Scotland before relocating to Seattle in 2008. While in Seattle, Nevey held senior positions with the Holland America Group. In 2023, he received the Governor’s Award for Leadership in Management.

Business Today recognizes the significance of Nevey’s appointment as assistant secretary for the Washington State Ferries Division. We applaud his dedication to improving the WSF system and look forward to witnessing the positive impact of his experience and leadership.
