What Does the Design of Thượng Cát Bridge Say About the Idea of Thạch Hãn 1 Bridge in Hanoi?
At a press conference on the afternoon of March 28th, Deputy Director of the Hanoi Department of Planning and Architecture, Nguyen Ba Nguyen, responded to information regarding the architectural design of Thượng Cát Bridge being similar to that of Thạch Hãn 1 Bridge in Quảng Trị province.
According to Mr. Nguyen Ba Nguyen, the city has established a selection committee for the design of Thượng Cát Bridge. Based on this, the selection committee has implemented the process as stipulated and has achieved three options, one of which is the first-prize winning design as reported in the press.
After receiving feedback, the Department of Planning and Architecture, as well as the selection committee, reviewed the designs and reported to the city’s People’s Committee.
Upon inspection, Mr. Nguyen Ba Nguyen affirmed that the two bridges are different in scale, bridge spans, location, and landscape.
Based on this, the Department of Planning and Architecture has reported to the city’s People’s Committee, ensuring a unified selection process.
“In late February, the Department of Planning and Architecture sent the design committee of the city to gather opinions,” Mr. Nguyen Ba Nguyen said.
According to Mr. Nguyen, the members of the city’s design committee are currently sending their opinions, and the department is in the process of consolidating them to issue a conclusion. From there, it will serve as a basis for implementation, ensuring compliance with the city’s directives and creating different architectural planning languages, avoiding speculation about the similarity of the two bridges.
Earlier, the media reflected that after the first-prize winning design for Thượng Cát Bridge, named “Wings of Peace,” was announced, many people compared it to the design of Thạch Hãn 1 Bridge in Quảng Trị and questioned the similarity.
In 2022, the design of Thạch Hãn 1 Bridge, named “Welcoming Dawn,” also won the first prize in the architectural design competition organized by the investor and is currently under construction.
The Thượng Cát Bridge project had its investment decision adjusted and approved by the Hanoi People’s Council in December 2023.
The bridge has a total length of 5.22 km, with the main bridge spanning 4.06 km and the bridge over the Red River spanning 600 m. The two approach bridges, in the North and South, have a combined length of over 3.4 km.
The total investment capital for the construction of the bridge is over 8,000 billion VND, and it is expected to be completed in 2027.
