Wi-Fi Woes: Google’s New Campus Compared to “The Bermuda Triangle”
Google’s latest campus, completed in 2022, is a cutting-edge office space entirely powered by electricity. It features the largest geothermal plant in North America, boasting 90,000 solar panels known as “Dragonscale,” which provide natural light and rainwater. The building itself resembles the architecture of the future.
Google’s decision to construct this facility was driven by employee feedback, with a focus on creating a more efficient and innovative workspace. The aim was to separate the workspace from the noise and commotion, allowing employees to concentrate and complete tasks effectively. Recognizing the need for personal space, the company has designed both collaborative and dedicated areas for easy access to both. Higher-level teams have access to group spaces, while lower-level employees can utilize communal areas.
However, it seems that the ease of wireless connectivity was not adequately considered during the design process. As reported by Reuters, six Google executives mentioned in an interview that they encountered difficulties due to poor and unstable Wi-Fi connections. In shared workspaces, some individuals have resorted to using Ethernet cables or relying on their smartphones’ Wi-Fi sharing feature for reliable internet access.
With Google encouraging a three-day workweek, the unreliable Wi-Fi in the workplace poses even more challenges. An AI engineer working at Bay View expressed their frustration, questioning, “What would you think if you were an internet company?”
The cause of the poor Wi-Fi connection remains unclear, but employees likened it to “the turbulence of the Bermuda Triangle, where ships and planes lose signals upon entering the area.”
A Google spokesperson confirmed the Wi-Fi issue at Bay View and mentioned that the company has implemented improvements to address the problem. Google’s workplace managers are encouraging employees to take walks outside or visit nearby coffee shops with strong Wi-Fi. Some individuals have even been provided with new laptops equipped with more powerful Wi-Fi chips.
