Xiaomi SU7: Solving the Biggest Issue in Modern Cars
The introduction of touchscreens in modern cars has been both loved and loathed by car enthusiasts. Recognizing this, Xiaomi is set to release the SU7 model in the Chinese market, catering to both sides. If you’re not satisfied with a touchscreen interface, Xiaomi is ready to provide a set of physical keys and switches that users can install themselves on the SU7.
A Unique Electric Car
The Xiaomi SU7 is an electric vehicle that stands out from the crowd. While it takes some design inspiration from the Porsche Taycan, its mechanical system and interior are more groundbreaking than its exterior. The interior of the car is designed in a modular form, something we haven’t seen before in a vehicle.
According to Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun during the SU7 introduction, the central screen is designed in a modular fashion. The standard screen will not come with any accessories, but it will have magnetic attachment points (and physical locks) on all four sides. Xiaomi is currently introducing a piano keyboard and a volume knob called the “docking unit.” It attaches directly to the bottom edge of the screen. Lei Jun’s presentation implies that there may be additional customizations available for the SU7 in the future.
Physical buttons are often associated with older cars in the minds of many Chinese electric vehicle drivers, so the touchscreen trend has dominated the market. However, there are many reasons why people may not prefer a fully touch-based interface. Xiaomi’s solution seems to offer drivers a choice without compromising the interior design.
Xiaomi’s “docking unit” is a simple solution to the physical vs. touch button debate. Hopefully, other manufacturers will follow Xiaomi’s lead and provide more physical customization options for car interfaces.
Xiaomi SU7 will officially go on sale and be delivered on March 28 in China, with two versions available. The single-motor version has a power output of 299 horsepower, while the dual-motor version has a power output of 673 horsepower and a range of 668 to 800 kilometers.
Just a few days ago, Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun confirmed that SU7 pre-orders are still increasing and have now surpassed 100,000, indicating strong demand for Xiaomi’s first electric car product.
