BYD’s New Battery Technology Coming to Vietnam

BYD Blade Battery

BYD, the Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer, is set to launch its second-generation Blade battery under the FinDreams division. The launch is expected to take place in August.

Blade – Revolutionizing the Global EV Market

Since its introduction in 2020, BYD’s Blade battery has made a significant impact in the global electric vehicle market. It has surpassed traditional lithium-ion and NCM (Nickel-Cobalt-Manganese) batteries, solidifying BYD’s position as a leader in the industry.

The Blade battery, based on lithium iron phosphate technology, offers comparable energy density to NCM batteries but at a significantly lower cost than lithium-ion batteries. The name “Blade” derives from the unique arrangement of individual battery cells to form a thin, blade-like structure.

This arrangement allows for optimal space utilization inside the battery, surpassing other lithium iron phosphate batteries used by competitors in the market. The energy density of the initial Blade battery was 140Wh/kg and later increased to 150Wh/kg. With the new generation, this figure can potentially reach 190Wh/kg.

According to BYD’s chairman, Wang Chuanfu, the second-generation Blade battery will be smaller, lighter, and have slower energy consumption. As a result, electric vehicles equipped with the Blade battery are expected to have a range of up to 1,000 km on a single charge. This is truly a dream-come-true figure, comparable to the theoretical range of solid-state batteries currently being developed by global automakers.

If BYD is able to achieve a range increase from 600 km (first-generation) to 1,000 km with the new generation, it would make BYD the leader in the electric vehicle segment, excelling in both price and range.

Enhanced Safety and Reliability

The second-generation Blade battery also promises enhanced safety features compared to its predecessor. This improvement aims to reduce the occurrence of fire incidents, which previously attracted criticism for BYD due to frequent incidents in China.
