DEWA employees lead the recycling revolution, saving over 7.1 tonnes of plastic bottles and aluminium cans

Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) continues to champion the principles of the circular economy, instilling sustainable habits among its employees. In a remarkable display of commitment, DEWA employees have recycled an impressive 499,541 plastic bottles and aluminium cans from October 2022 to December 2023. This concerted effort has diverted a staggering 7,108 kilograms of waste from ending up in landfills.

Smart recycling, smart rewards

DEWA has implemented smart recycling machines in select office buildings, allowing employees to conveniently recycle plastic bottles and aluminium cans. Operating these machines through DEWA’s Smart Office app provides a seamless experience. Each recycling operation rewards employees with points that enter them into a monthly raffle draw for valuable prizes. The impact of this initiative is evident, with 49 employees recognized by DEWA for their active involvement in recycling.

DEWA recycling initiatives

Advancing the circular economy

DEWA’s recycling initiatives align with the UAE Circular Economy Policy and DEWA’s Circular Economy Strategy. The focus is on optimizing resource usage while enriching social, economic, and environmental value. By promoting sustainable practices such as recycling and waste reduction, DEWA contributes to the Dubai Integrated Waste Management Strategy 2021-2041. This comprehensive plan fosters innovation in waste management and recycling, as well as converting waste into energy, while providing practical solutions to environmental challenges.

Building awareness, inspiring change

DEWA goes beyond infrastructure and technology, prioritizing education and awareness among its employees. Thirteen activities were organized to underscore the significance of adopting a responsible and sustainable lifestyle in both personal and professional realms. These initiatives encourage electricity and water conservation, waste reduction, limited plastic consumption, and the reuse and recycling of plastic bottles and aluminium cans.
