The First Person to Have Neuralink Chip Implanted in the Brain Can Play Games on a Laptop with Their Thoughts
Neuralink, the company founded by billionaire Elon Musk, has taken a major step towards creating a computer implanted inside the human brain by successfully implanting a chip into the brain of a quadriplegic man. After nearly two months of surgery, the identity of the man has been revealed as 29-year-old Nolan Arbaugh.
Neuralink conducted a livestream on its official Twitter account to update the public on Nolan Arbaugh’s health status. According to the company, Nolan has fully recovered and is now able to control the mouse cursor on a computer using his thoughts.
Nolan shared his experience during the livestream, explaining that he became quadriplegic after a terrifying accident while scuba diving eight years ago. Therefore, using a computer was considered an impossible task for Nolan. However, after the Neuralink chip was implanted in his brain, Nolan was able to move the mouse cursor to play chess games and even strategic games like Civilization on his laptop.
By reading brain signals and translating them into remote control commands via Bluetooth, Neuralink’s chip allows individuals to control electronic devices with their thoughts.
“I can control the mouse cursor and move it anywhere on the laptop screen just by thinking. It’s amazing. I feel fortunate to be a part of this,” Nolan shared.
Although the Neuralink chip still has limitations, such as the need for recharging after continuous operation, it has wireless charging capabilities. However, the details of how the chip is recharged once implanted in the human brain are still unclear.
Nolan admitted that the chip has changed his life, although it is not yet perfect.
“I still face some challenges. I don’t want people to think this is the end of the journey. There is still a lot to do, but it’s clear that the chip has changed my life,” Nolan shared during the livestream.
Following the success of the first brain implant, Neuralink is continuing to accept voluntary registrations for clinical trials, which are expected to last for six years. The company aims to help individuals with quadriplegia or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a motor neuron disease that affects mobility.
Founded by Elon Musk in 2016, Neuralink aims to develop a special chip that can be implanted in the human brain, measuring just 4mm and connecting to the brain through thousands of artificial nerve fibers. The initial goal of Neuralink is to enable paralyzed individuals to control computers or smartphones with their minds, followed by treatments for memory loss and other neurological disorders.
Explaining the purpose of founding Neuralink, Elon Musk stated that the rapid development of artificial intelligence poses a threat to humanity. To prevent humans from being left behind by machines, there is a need for a device that enhances human intelligence and physical capabilities. Ultimately, Neuralink’s goal is to enhance human intelligence.
Elon Musk’s ambition has sparked controversy in the scientific community, as some believe that implanting chips inside the human brain raises ethical concerns.
