An Unexplained Tragedy
The Japanese pharmaceutical company, Kobayashi, has announced that the fifth death case might be linked to their functional food made from red yeast rice. This product is believed to reduce bad cholesterol. The victims, aged between 70 and 90, were among 680 individuals who reported symptoms possibly related to the consumption of this functional food.
In response to the situation, Kobayashi has pledged compensation for the affected families, as well as the 114 hospitalized individuals. The company is taking responsibility and working on resolving the issue.
Unraveling the Mystery
Both the Ministry of Health in Japan and Kobayashi conducted an investigation into the matter. The company’s internal examination revealed the presence of puberulic acid in their red yeast rice products, a natural compound derived from blue mold. This unexpected finding has raised concerns about its potential impact on consumer health.
Kobayashi stated that further research is needed to determine whether puberulic acid is connected to the reported health issues. The Ministry of Health will collaborate with the company to conduct additional tests on this substance.
